After you learn Celestial Navigation, join this eight-nine day ocean passage on a 39 foot sailboat from Rock Hall, MD to Bermuda or return passage.  Navigate using your sextant or ours and perform celestial navigation on the ocean.  Four Ocean passages available in 2025.  Please see list of 2025 Ocean Passages in list Description section below.

Must be a competent sailor prior to the passage as indicated by submission of an acceptable sailing resume or ASA certifications for ASA101, ASA103, ASA104, ASA105, ASA106, ASA 117 and/or ASA107.  Requires approval of a sailing resume prior to sign up.  Please send sailing resume to Captainmike@centerforcelestialnavigation.com or Captainmike@delmarvasailingschool.com for approval.  

This passage meets or exceeds requirements for ASA108 Ocean Passage Making certification.  ASA 108 Certification issued by Delmarva Sailing School. https://www.delmarvasailingschool.com/ The ASA108 standard requires that students do a compass calibration using a celestial body and perform a sun run sun running fix.  In addition to the ASA108 standard requirements, our Passage allows students to perform Local Apparent Noon, position fixes using lines of position for the sun, moon, and planets, and stars.  Students also use the Star Finder and perform calculations to determine sunset, sunrise and evening and morning twilight.

In addition to performing Celestial Navigation on the ocean, students learn the skills required to safely sail offshore for an extended period.  Students gain an understanding of yacht preparation for ocean sailing, course planning, working a watch schedule, weather analysis, storm avoidance, heavy weather sailing techniques including use of drogue and storm jib, use of radar, techniques for crossing the Gulf Stream, and other elements involved in ocean passage making. Taught by Captain Michael Brown, an ASA certified Instructor Evaluator and USCG ocean master licensed captain and highly experienced sailor with over 40,000 Nautical Miles on the ocean. Class is conducted on 39 foot Pearson sloop. 

Includes optional ASA 108 certification, all on board food and beverages, and clearance fees.  Sleep aboard for free all nights of the class and the evening before the class begins.

Prerequisites: ASA101, ASA103, ASA104, ASA105, ASA106, and either ASA117 or ASA107.

Rock Hall, MD to Bermuda- May 1- May 9, 2025. 140 nautical miles on the Chesapeake Bay and 615 nautical miles on the ocean. Nine days including three days from Rock Hall, MD to Norfolk, VA and five and a half days from Norfolk, VA to Bermuda.

Bermuda to Rock Hall, MD- May 18- May 26, 2025. 140 nautical miles on the Chesapeake Bay and 615 nautical miles on the ocean. Nine days including five and a half days from Bermuda to Norfolk, VA and three days from Norfolk, VA to Rock Hall, MD.

Rock Hall, MD to Bermuda- November 1- November 9, 2025. 140 nautical miles on the Chesapeake Bay and 615 nautical miles on the ocean. Nine days including three days from Rock Hall, MD to Norfolk, VA and five and a half days from Norfolk, VA to Bermuda.

Bermuda to Rock Hall, MD- November 16- November 24, 2025. 140 nautical miles on the Chesapeake Bay and 615 nautical miles on the ocean. Nine days including five and a half days from Bermuda to Norfolk, VA and three days from Norfolk, VA to Rock Hall, MD.
